The countess was married to Lionel, Duke of Clarencethe second surviving son of the king, Edward IIIand the position brought the teenage Chaucer into the close court circle, where he was to remain for the rest of his life. These references reveal the identity of the grieving black knight of the poem as John of Gaunt, Duke of Lancaster and Earl of Richmond. But it is necessary to say a few words on the whole subject, owing to the extremely erroneous opinions that are so widely prevalent. Thomas's great-grandson Geoffrey's great-great-grandsonJohn de la Pole, Earl of Lincolnwas the heir to the throne designated by Richard III before he was deposed. I give a few examples of the three rules stated above.

For haue read have P. For For, he prints As for. For In, he has All in. The first period includes his early work towhich is based largely on French models, especially the Roman de la Rose and the poems of Guillaume de Machaut. These words were probably frequently used in the language at the time but Chaucer, with his ear for common speech, is the earliest extant manuscript source. A few more quotations are here subjoined, without comment.

Chaucer continued to collect the liquid stipend until Richard II came to power, after which it was converted to a monetary grant on 18 April But readers have not, as yet, been permitted to see this line in its correct form. The black-letter editions insert sore before aferd. His achievement for the language can be seen as part of a general historical trend towards the creation of a vernacular literatureafter the example of Dantein many parts of Europe. We can scan it now in the present century, but it is strongly to be suspected that Stowe could not, and did not care to try.
